The Shoulder Launched Munitions, All Types program is a key Army procurement line item supporting both operational and training requirements for a range of shoulder-fired munitions. The program aims to ensure operational readiness and modernization of Army forces by providing effective anti-armor and bunker defeat capabilities, as well as comprehensive training devices. The FY 2026 base budget request is allocated to procure six distinct items, each tailored to meet specific combat, training, and test requirements in accordance with DoD Instruction 3000.04 and Army Regulation 5-13.
Launcher and Cartridge 84MM M136A1 (AT4CS-RS) is the Army's primary shoulder-launched, lightweight anti-armor weapon, designed for use in joint, multi-domain, high-intensity conflicts. Its main objective is to defeat light armor targets and provide soldiers with a fire-from-enclosure capability, enhancing survivability in close combat. The FY 2026 request supports annual training and builds war reserve inventory, with engineering support as the item remains in production. This system is classified as service-ready and supports the Army's operational readiness strategy.
Shoulder Launched Individual Assault Munition (IAM) encompasses both tactical munitions and associated training devices. The XM919 IAM provides soldiers with the ability to defeat field fortifications and light armored vehicles in urban and complex terrain, supporting the Army's Soldier Lethality Modernization Line of Effort. The FY 2026 request includes procurement of IAMs, with a scheduled type classification in the third quarter of FY26. The program also funds training devices such as the XM922 sub-caliber trainer, SCT tracer ammunition, and Field Handling Trainer, managed by PEO Simulation, Training and Instrumentation (PEO STRI), to ensure effective integration and proficiency with the tactical system.
Training Device SLM IAM Field Handling Trainer (FHT) is a new start in FY 2026, with procurement planned for multiple units. The FHT is an inert replica of the XM919 IAM, designed to support individual and collective training at installation Training Support Centers worldwide. Its objective is to provide a safe, realistic training environment for soldiers to perform operator tasks and participate in collective exercises, thereby enhancing readiness and reducing risk during live training.
CTG, XXMM Practice F/IAM Sub-Caliber (XM922 SCT Ammo) is another new start for FY 2026, with training cartridges planned for procurement. These rounds closely mimic the trajectory of the XM919 tactical round and include a tracer element for improved training feedback. The cartridges are distributed to Army installation ammunition supply points to support unit-level training, aiming to increase proficiency and reduce overall training costs.
Training Device SLM IAM Subcaliber Launcher is funded for additional launchers in FY 2026. This device is designed to fire sub-caliber tracer rounds matched to the XM919, providing cost-effective operator training for infantry, cavalry, and engineer squad gunners. The launchers are fielded globally to support initial entry and home station training, further supporting the Army's readiness objectives.
Bunker Defeat Munition (BDM), 83mm Rocket & Launcher, M141 is a single-shot, disposable munition used to defeat earth and timber fortifications and lightly armored vehicles. While there is no FY 2026 budget request for new procurement, previous investments have built a war reserve inventory to support joint, multi-domain operations. The BDM is service-ready and supports both training and combat requirements, contributing to the Army's ability to respond to near-peer threats and homeland defense missions.
