Description
The Rockets program under the Air Force aims to enhance precision and effectiveness in combat scenarios through advanced rocket systems. A significant part of this initiative is the WGU-59B Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II (APKWS II), used on A-10 and F-16 aircraft. This system converts unguided 2.75-inch rockets into precision laser-guided munitions, improving accuracy and reducing collateral damage. It is designed to engage moving and transient targets across various terrains, including urban, desert, and mountainous environments.

The program's objectives include equipping the Air Force with versatile rocket systems capable of supporting multiple mission profiles such as low collateral damage engagements, target marking, and battlefield illumination. The 2.75-inch diameter rocket system features a single-stage solid grain rocket motor and can carry various payloads, including illuminating flare warheads, infrared illuminating flare warheads, and high explosive warheads. These rockets are launched from reusable pods like the LAU-131A/A extended length launcher, ensuring compatibility with both legacy and modern systems.

Procurement for these systems is managed through collaborations with the U.S. Army Missile Command and the Department of the Navy PMA-242. The program emphasizes maintaining production capabilities by addressing potential issues such as diminishing manufacturing sources and material shortages. This involves conducting studies, bridge buys, life-of-type buys, and supplier/parts replacement activities to ensure sustained production capacity.

Additionally, the Rockets program aligns with digital acquisition principles by investing in analytical tools, information management systems, digital environments, networks, and security infrastructure upgrades. These efforts support both development and sustainment of the program's capabilities while leveraging Department of Defense enterprise IT solutions. Although no funding was requested for FY 2025, the program remains integral to fulfilling homeland defense missions and providing military support to civil authorities as outlined in relevant legislative mandates.
