Description
The Protected Tactical Enterprise Service (PTES) program is a key initiative by the United States Space Force aimed at enhancing secure communications for tactical warfighters. The primary goal of PTES is to develop a software-intensive ground system that supports protected tactical waveform (PTW) communications, which are crucial for operations in congested and contested environments. This system will initially leverage the Wideband Global Satellite Communications (WGS) system to provide an anti-jam capability, ensuring reliable communication paths for military operations.
A significant component of PTES is the development of a Mission Management System, a Key Management System, and Joint Hub Variants. These elements are designed to facilitate PTW communications via both military and commercial satellite systems, offering greater network resiliency. The program also includes the integration of existing wideband terminals with upgraded PTW modems, developed through the Protected Tactical Service Field Demonstration. This integration aims to enhance the capabilities of various military branches, including the Navy's Wideband Anti-Jam Modem System and the Air Force-Army Anti-Jam Modem.
The PTW Over Commercial project, initiated under PTES, focuses on expanding anti-jam communications capabilities by utilizing commercial satellite constellations. This effort seeks to address critical tactical SATCOM gaps by leveraging emerging satellite technologies in various orbits, such as Geosynchronous Orbit and Medium Earth Orbit. The project involves studies and demonstrations to inform requirements and improve interoperability with commercial systems, ultimately enhancing SATCOM flexibility and resiliency for joint force operations.
The PTES program aims to achieve Initial Operational Capability by FY 2025 and Full Operational Capability by FY 2026 for worldwide operations using WGS satellites. For the PTW Over Commercial initiative, Initial Operational Capability is targeted for CY 2026, with Full Operational Capability anticipated by CY 2029. These efforts collectively contribute to a more resilient and adaptable SATCOM architecture capable of supporting diverse military needs in dynamic operational environments.
