Next Generation Squad Weapon

Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) is an Army procurement line aligned with the Soldier Lethality Modernization Priority. It falls under Procurement of Weapons and Tracked Combat Vehicles, Army, Budget Activity 02, Weapons and Other Combat Vehicles, and Budget Sub-Activity 10. The program fields a family of small arms, advanced Fire Control, and compatible 6.8mm ammunition to improve close-combat performance against protected and unprotected threats. Its planned replacements for legacy weapons are intended to increase range, accuracy, probability of hit, controllability, and mobility while reducing engagement time and flash and sound signatures.

The family comprises the XM8 Carbine, M7 Rifle, and M250 Automatic Rifle. The XM8 is a lightweight, short-barrel variant of the M7; the carbine and rifle address roles served by the M4-series carbine, while the M250 replaces the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW). The Army plans to field the weapons, advanced Fire Control, and 6.8mm Common Cartridge concurrently so squads receive an integrated capability rather than isolated equipment changes. This combined fielding is intended to maintain overmatch against near-peer threats.

Next Generation Squad Weapon Automatic Rifle funding in fiscal year 2027 supports procurement and fielding of 2,795 M250s for the Close Combat Force. The allocation includes rifle hardware, initial spares, arms-room racks, transportation, integration and engineering-change efforts, package fielding, integrated logistics support, and new-equipment training. SIG Sauer produces the weapon in Newington, New Hampshire, under firm-fixed-price orders administered by Army Contracting Command New Jersey at Picatinny Arsenal. The planned January 2027 award has a first delivery scheduled for July 2027; the Army acquisition objective is 13,334 M250s.

Next Generation Squad Weapon Rifle funding in fiscal year 2027 procures and fields 14,944 XM8 Carbines to replace M4A1 Carbines in the Close Combat Force. Earlier purchases on this line included M7 Rifles, while the fiscal year 2026 and 2027 hardware orders are for the shorter XM8 variant. The request also covers spares, weapon-storage racks, vehicle integration projects, engineering-change proposals, technical publications, logistics, fielding, and training. SIG Sauer's planned January 2027 carbine award has a first delivery scheduled for July 2027; the stated M7 acquisition objective is 111,428, while the XM8 objective remains to be determined.

Next Generation Squad Weapon Fire Control funding in fiscal year 2027 procures and fields 20,402 advanced systems, alongside optics, sights, lasers, and other weapon enablers. Fire Control supports both close-quarter and extended-range engagements through a variable-power direct-view optic integrating a range finder, ballistic calculator, and digital display that provides an adjusted aim point. Its open architecture is intended to permit capability increments as technology matures. The line also supports engineering data, technical publications, fielding, logistics, training, and system engineering; the advanced Fire Control acquisition objective is 124,749 systems.

Sheltered Wings, doing business as Vortex Optics, supplies Fire Control systems from Barneveld, Wisconsin, under firm-fixed-price orders. The fiscal year 2027 award is planned for January 2027, with first delivery scheduled for November 2028. Electronic-supply-chain constraints and challenges in U.S.-based precision-glass manufacturing contribute to the long production lead time. The schedule uses a conservative 22-month reorder lead time, although the vendor has been reducing lead times and the program office expects a substantially shorter interval by fiscal year 2027. Hardware planning is also affected by the Army's ongoing alternate-optic strategy.

The fiscal year 2027 base request totals 38,141 procurement units across the three lines, distributed between the active Army and Army National Guard; no overseas-operations contingency request is shown. The increase over fiscal year 2026 is intended to maintain steady production for both vendors and support fielding into fiscal year 2028. Earlier procurement records show M7 orders giving way to XM8 orders, while M250 and Fire Control purchases continue. The Army also identifies these items as necessary for active and reserve components' homeland-defense missions, domestic emergency responses, and military support to civil authorities.
