Description
The Modular Advanced Missile (MAM) program, part of the Armament Demonstration and Validation initiative, is a significant effort by the Air Force to advance missile technology through research, development, testing, and evaluation. This program focuses on developing and demonstrating modular missile technologies that can be integrated into future air-launched systems. The primary goal is to reduce risks associated with future missile programs by designing, developing, integrating, and testing various modular subsystems. These efforts aim to inform future acquisition and production decisions.
The initiative emphasizes maturing new or emerging armament technologies, including processes, interfaces, mission planning, special test equipment, and resources necessary for advanced capabilities. The program seeks to leverage the Science and Technology community's efforts to design and demonstrate prototypes that meet current and future requirements while reducing life-cycle costs. Additionally, it aims to increase competition for system capability upgrades by utilizing a scalable/modular architecture compliant with Weapon Government Reference Architecture.
A significant aspect of the MAM program is its focus on implementing Digital Acquisition principles such as Open, Agile, and Digital methodologies. This involves fostering industrial base innovation around modularity and adaptability throughout the weapon system's life cycle. The program also invests in analytical tools, data management systems, digital environments, networks, facilities, and security infrastructure upgrades. These investments support capability development while leveraging Department of Defense and Department of the Air Force enterprise IT solutions.
Furthermore, the program engages with DoD, DAF, and industry stakeholders to refine threat analysis and inventory requirements while planning for necessary upgrades. It capitalizes on successful laboratory research applicable to its capabilities. The initiative also includes expanding program office staff and facilities to support required classification levels for its activities. The Modular Advanced Missile program represents a comprehensive approach to advancing missile technology through strategic research and development efforts.
