Description
The Marine Group 5 UAS program, part of the Navy's Aircraft Procurement initiative, is focused on acquiring unmanned aircraft systems to enhance the Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF). This initiative aims to procure air vehicles and associated equipment, including sensors and ground support tools, to meet capability requirements outlined in the MUX ICD and Requirements Clarification document from October 2016. The primary goal is to support the Marine Littoral Regiment (MLR) by providing advanced stand-off sensing and Command, Control, Communication, and Computers (C4) capabilities.

The program utilizes a Block 5 MQ-9A airframe as part of the MUX Family of Systems (FoS), designed to offer direct support in peer-to-peer conflicts. By integrating these systems, the Marine Group 5 UAS enhances domain awareness and survivability for the MLR. The strategy involves acquiring units through a USAF contract, with initial production completed in FY22 and subsequent units transferred from existing USAF inventory. This approach ensures efficient use of existing resources while meeting operational goals.

In FY25, resources are directed towards ancillary equipment, support tools, site establishment, SATCOM and terrestrial network connectivity, training devices, and technical publications. These elements are crucial for setting up operational capabilities and ensuring personnel are adequately trained to utilize these systems effectively. The emphasis on training and technical publications underscores the importance of readiness and proficiency in operating these advanced unmanned systems.

The Marine Group 5 UAS program represents a strategic effort to bolster the Navy's unmanned aircraft capabilities by providing essential support to ground forces through enhanced surveillance and communication technologies. By aligning with existing USAF resources and focusing on comprehensive training and support infrastructure, this program aims to deliver robust operational capabilities that align with modern military needs.
