Description
The MC AVS Development & Demonstration program, part of the Navy's Research, Development, Test & Evaluation efforts, focuses on advancing the Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV) Family of Vehicles. This initiative aims to replace the legacy Assault Amphibious Vehicle battalions within Marine Divisions with modern ACVs that enhance mobility and support for Marine Infantry Battalions. The program's objectives include improving lethality against dismounted enemy troops, enhancing tactical mobility on land and water, and increasing force protection and survivability against various threats.
The program is structured to deliver multiple variants of the ACV, each designed for specific roles. Initial operational capabilities for personnel carriers were achieved in 2020. Subsequent variants such as command and control, improved lethality, and tactical recovery are planned for phased development. The improved lethality variant is set to complete its design and development phase by FY 2024, while the tactical recovery variant is expected to enter production in FY 2027.
Key activities within the program include system design and development, engineering and manufacturing development test vehicle manufacturing, and prime contractor test support. In FY 2025, efforts will focus on completing developmental testing and evaluation for the improved lethality variant while initiating similar activities for the tactical recovery variant. Additionally, logistics demonstration efforts and training systems development will ensure operational readiness.
The acquisition strategy involves competitive contracts awarded for engineering and manufacturing development, with a phased approach to production that includes low-rate initial production followed by full-rate production. The program has navigated challenges such as funding adjustments and scheduling impacts due to external factors like COVID-19 but remains committed to delivering advanced amphibious capabilities aligned with Marine Corps requirements for Fleet Marine Force 2030.
