Description
The KC-46A Tanker Squadrons program is focused on replacing the aging fleet of aerial refueling aircraft with the KC-46A, a modern tanker designed to enhance the United States Air Force's refueling capabilities. The primary goal is to develop and procure 179 KC-46A aircraft, replacing about one-third of the current tanker fleet. This effort is part of a long-term strategy to recapitalize the entire fleet over more than 30 years. The KC-46A is intended to operate in various conditions, providing air refueling, cargo transport, passenger services, and aeromedical evacuation capabilities.

The Pegasus Capability Improvements project within this program aims to enhance the aircraft's communication and operational capabilities. It includes upgrading tactical data links and secure communication systems to ensure compatibility with joint and allied forces. The project supports real-time command and control for aircrew situational awareness through Line-of-Sight (LOS) and Beyond-Line-of-Sight (BLOS) connectivity. It also addresses post-production requirements such as avionics updates, structural improvements, and sustainment support.

The KC-46 RDT&E project is dedicated to research, development, testing, and evaluation activities for the KC-46A aircraft. This involves developing military capabilities for the commercial 767-2C aircraft base, building four engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) aircraft, and conducting comprehensive testing. The project also focuses on refining product designs, addressing deficiencies through engineering change proposals, and supporting training systems development. These efforts aim to certify the KC-46A's aerial refueling capabilities and ensure its readiness for operational deployment.

These initiatives are designed to enhance the Air Force's operational effectiveness by providing a modernized tanker fleet capable of supporting joint warfighting concepts. The program emphasizes flexibility in addressing evolving mission requirements while maintaining a focus on cost management and technical risk mitigation throughout its lifecycle.
