Description
The Joint Tactical Ground System (JTAGS) is an essential part of the United States' missile warning infrastructure, providing near real-time data on ballistic missile launches and other tactical events. It supports the Air and Missile Defense architecture, enhancing Integrated Air and Missile Defense Fire Control Systems. JTAGS operates through a network of units deployed across various theaters, including the United States Pacific Command, Central Command, and European Command. An additional unit in the contiguous United States serves as both a trainer and deployable asset.
The primary objective of JTAGS is to develop and test enhancements under the Block II Preplanned Product Improvement initiative. This involves upgrading JTAGS to work with next-generation Space Based Infrared System satellites, improving warning parameters and timeliness. The program addresses evolving threats by integrating new capabilities as outlined in the Capability Development Document. These efforts are supported by directives from the Joint Requirements Oversight Council and legislative mandates such as the Ike Skelton National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2011.
In FY 2025, JTAGS will focus on enhancing cyber compliance, defending against emerging threats, and ensuring Assured Positioning, Navigation, and Timing compliance. The program aims to mitigate obsolescence through Commercial Off-The-Shelf hardware/software upgrades and prototype development for system modifications. These activities are crucial for maintaining system resiliency and situational awareness in contested space domains.
The transition of JTAGS to the US Space Force in FY 2024 marks a significant shift in its operational management. The program will continue leveraging technical assistance for implementing Block II capabilities while conducting thorough testing and evaluation to validate performance. The acquisition strategy emphasizes using Non-Developmental Items and Government Furnished Equipment to ensure cost-effective improvements while maintaining operational effectiveness.
