Description
The program "Items Less Than $5.0m (WOCV-WTCV)" under the Army's procurement activities is focused on enhancing combat capabilities through acquiring various weapons and auxiliary components. This initiative supports Army Modernization priorities by building a more lethal force, particularly in contested environments. The objectives align with the National Defense Strategy by addressing the erosion of close combat capabilities relative to peer competitors in complex terrains.
A primary goal is to procure and field both standard and non-standard small arms, along with auxiliary components such as tripods, combat optics, and suppressors. These components are essential for meeting urgent needs or initial buys, ensuring that the Army is equipped with modern and effective tools for combat scenarios. The program has previously included items like MK48 Machine Guns, Modular Handgun Systems, M500 Mossberg Shotguns, and various submachine guns, along with necessary accessories such as magazines, holsters, and cleaning kits.
In FY 2025, support will be provided for several key initiatives including training U.S. Army and foreign security forces on host nation weapon systems. It will also facilitate the procurement of non-standard weapons for Regionally Aligned Forces and Security Force Assistance Brigades. Additionally, specialized target rifles and accessories will be acquired for the Army Marksmanship Unit and National Guard Biathlon Teams. The program also includes limited distribution of Olympic-grade marksmanship weapons to support high-level training needs.
Moreover, this program addresses domestic needs by providing resources for homeland defense missions and emergency responses. In FY 2023, it included emergency supplemental support to replace weapons transferred to Ukraine as part of international efforts against Russian aggression. This aspect underscores the program's flexibility in responding to both international commitments and domestic security requirements.
