Description
The ITAS/TOW Mods program is focused on enhancing the capabilities of the Improved Target Acquisition System (ITAS) integrated with the TOW Missile. This system is designed to provide long-range, lethal anti-armor and precision assault capabilities for both Active Component and Army National Guard Infantry Brigade Combat Teams, as well as Stryker Brigade Combat Teams. The primary objective is to ensure these units are equipped with Modified ITAS (MITAS) to effectively operate across various contemporary operational environments.
A key goal is to maintain and upgrade the system's ability to defeat armored vehicles, bunkers, and buildings at extended ranges under all battlefield conditions. The system's superior surveillance capabilities allow soldiers to detect targets at long distances, providing them with the option to engage using TOW missiles or other weapon systems. This capability is further enhanced by its ability to generate a precise 10-digit grid coordinate of target locations, thus shaping the battlefield effectively.
The program also aims to support homeland defense missions and domestic emergency responses by ensuring that both active and reserve components of the Armed Forces are equipped with this advanced technology. The ITAS completed fielding to the total Army in December 2012 and continues to be a preferred choice in precision combat engagements. Although there is no request for FY 2025, the program remains crucial for military support to civil authorities as outlined in Section 1815 of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act.
