Description
The Guam Defense Development program, managed by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), is focused on establishing a comprehensive missile defense system for Guam. As part of the Pacific Deterrence Initiative (PDI), it aims to counter ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missile threats. The program's objectives include developing and integrating a distributed network of land-based launchers, sensors, and communications systems across Guam. This effort involves collaboration between the MDA, U.S. Army, and U.S. Navy to create a 360-degree persistent integrated air and missile defense system.
Key components include the Aegis Weapon System and the AN/TPY-6 Radar, which are crucial for detecting and intercepting incoming threats. The program also emphasizes environmental studies, site design, and activation to ensure compliance with federal regulations. By FY 2025, there are plans to conduct an on-island flight experiment to test the system's capabilities. The integration of these systems will be managed through a Joint Command Center equipped with advanced battle management and communication technologies.
The development strategy involves leveraging existing contracts and partnerships with industry leaders such as Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman. These collaborations focus on engineering support, radar development, and system integration to ensure that the defense architecture is both effective and adaptable to evolving threats. Additionally, there are provisions for environmental protection measures to mitigate any potential impacts on Guam's ecosystem.
The Guam Defense Development seeks to enhance regional security through advanced technological solutions and strategic partnerships. By FY 2029, it aims to achieve enhanced capability with further improvements anticipated in the 2030s. This initiative underscores the Department of Defense's commitment to maintaining a robust defense posture in the Indo-Pacific region.
