Description
The Gray Eagle Mods2 program is dedicated to enhancing the capabilities of the MQ-1C Gray Eagle, an uncrewed aircraft system used by the Army for multi-domain operations. The program's primary objectives include executing reconnaissance, security, attack, and intelligence collection missions across various military operations. To achieve these goals, it involves the procurement and integration of advanced sensors and payloads such as Electro-Optical/Infrared/Laser Designator systems, Synthetic Aperture Radar/Moving Target Indicators, Signals Intelligence equipment, and HELLFIRE missiles.
A significant aspect of the initiative is addressing obsolescence while maintaining mission readiness through various modifications. This includes procuring expeditionary ground equipment like control stations and datalinks with new single/multi-band satellite communication capabilities. Additionally, avionics upgrades are planned to enhance processing power and integrate M-Code navigators to ensure effective operation in GPS-denied environments. These efforts align with Army Assured-Positioning Navigation and Timing requirements mandated by Public Law 111-383.
The program also focuses on propulsion system enhancements to maintain operational readiness for the MQ-1C Gray Eagle fleet. This includes procuring new engine propulsion systems to support advanced sensor payloads and increase endurance. The Heavy Fuel Engine 2.0 is part of this upgrade, featuring a 200hp engine designed for end-of-life replacement and improved performance in contested environments. These upgrades aim to establish a modular open system architecture that supports future payload integration for multi-domain operations.
Communications modernization is another key component of the Gray Eagle Mods2 program. This involves integrating Link-16 capabilities to enhance operational reach and reduce cognitive burden on soldiers. The modernization effort includes procuring multi-band communication equipment for beyond-line-of-sight data transmission and replacing obsolete processors to improve system processing capabilities. These initiatives collectively aim to enhance the MQ-1C Gray Eagle's effectiveness in supporting homeland defense missions, domestic emergency responses, and military support to civil authorities as outlined in Section 1815 of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act (P.L. 110-181).
