Description
The GPS III Follow-On (GPS IIIF) program, managed by the Air Force, aims to enhance the capabilities of the existing Global Positioning System by developing and deploying improved satellites. The primary goal is to deliver advanced Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) technology. This ensures backward compatibility while integrating new features such as Unified S-Band interface compliance and Regional Military Protection capabilities. The program involves integrating hosted payloads like a redesigned US Nuclear Detonation Detection System payload and Laser Retro-reflector Arrays to improve satellite accuracy.
The program also focuses on the development of GPS Enterprise Integration (EI), which is crucial for maintaining the current GPS architecture and ensuring compatibility across different system generations. GPS EI manages plans for execution and fielding new capabilities, such as the new M-Code, which enhances military signal strength in specific regions. It provides modeling, simulation, and technical analyses to support government decisions on enterprise-level trades among GPS segments.
To achieve these objectives, GPS IIIF includes Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) efforts for satellites 11-12. This encompasses risk-reducing simulators and systems engineering necessary for delivering new satellite capabilities. The program supports integration with ground and user segments through the Next Generation Operational Control System (OCX) and Military GPS User Equipment programs.
Furthermore, GPS Enterprise Integration plays a pivotal role in ensuring that all elements of the GPS system work effectively together. It supports integrated development and operational testing using operational assets while providing technical expertise in cybersecurity and spectrum protection. This ensures that PNT capabilities meet both military and civilian needs while maintaining compliance with international standards and agreements.
