CVN Refueling Overhauls

The CVN Refueling Overhauls program is a critical initiative by the Navy to ensure the longevity and operational readiness of its aircraft carriers. The primary goal is to refuel the nuclear reactors and perform comprehensive overhauls on the main propulsion equipment, extending their service life by over 23 years. This process involves significant upgrades and repairs essential for maintaining the carriers' ability to support sustained operations at sea, including engaging in attacks on targets both afloat and ashore.

The objectives include enhancing various systems onboard, such as electronics, ordnance, and hull, mechanical, and electrical (HM&E) components. Upgrades to electronic systems like the Ship Self Defense System (SSDS) MK2 MOD 1E and the AN/SPN-50(V)1 Air Traffic Control Radar are planned to improve combat readiness and operational efficiency. Additionally, ordnance systems such as the Enterprise Air Surveillance Radar (EASR) and NATO Seasparrow Surface Missile System (NSSMS) will be refurbished or modernized to ensure they remain effective against evolving threats.

Improving sailor quality of life through infrastructure enhancements like parking garages at Naval Station Norfolk is another key objective. These initiatives support sailor well-being during extended periods of maintenance and overhaul. The program also emphasizes cost management by leveraging efficiencies in engineering and procurement processes, such as the dual buy option exercised for EASR hardware to achieve savings.
