CTG, Handgun, All Types

The CTG, Handgun, All Types program is a key line item within the Army's ammunition procurement budget, supporting the acquisition of various 9mm handgun cartridges for operational, training, and test requirements. The overarching goal of this program is to ensure the Army and other Department of Defense (DoD) components have a reliable supply of service-ready handgun ammunition to meet Title 10 war reserve, operational, and training needs. The program is justified by DoD Instruction 3000.04 and Army Regulation 5-13, which mandate the maintenance of adequate munitions inventories for combatant commander operational plans, homeland defense, and other directed missions.

CTG, 9mm Ball, M882 (Combat Pack) is a standard cartridge used primarily in the M9 and M11 pistols. Its main objective is to provide a NATO-standardized, reliable round for both training and combat operations. The M882 cartridge features a copper alloy jacket and lead alloy core, and is packed in military-type packaging to ensure durability and compatibility with operational environments. Although there is no FY 2026 base budget request for this item, it remains type-classified as service-ready and is a critical component of previous years' procurement, supporting both active and reserve forces.

CTG, Modular Handgun System (MHS) Ammunition supports the Army's transition to the M17 and M18 pistols, as well as the Glock 19 Gen 5. This ammunition line includes five distinct 9mm cartridges: Ball M1152, Special Purpose M1153, Drill Dummy Inert (DDI) M1156, Blank M1157, and 9mm 135 grain +P law enforcement rounds. The Ball and Special Purpose cartridges are designed for combat and situations requiring reduced collateral damage, respectively. DDI and Blank cartridges facilitate training and weapon familiarization, including K-9 training. The program continues to build war reserve inventory and support annual training requirements.

CTG, 9mm Marking, M1041 (Blue) is a specialized training cartridge used for force-on-force engagements. Its primary objective is to provide a safe, low-velocity marking round that enables after-action evaluation during training scenarios. The cartridge can be fired from standard service pistols and rifles with conversion kits, and its projectile leaves a visible mark upon impact. Procurement supports depot-level inventory for ongoing training needs.

CTG, 9mm Marking, M1041 (Red) serves a similar training function as the blue marking round, but provides a different color for scenario differentiation. Like the blue variant, it is designed for use in close-proximity training with properly protected human subjects and is fired from service pistols and rifles with appropriate conversion kits. Procurement supports annual training and depot-level inventory objectives.

The program's procurement activities are managed through contracts with manufacturers such as Olin Corporation Winchester for the MHS ammunition, and Canadian Commercial Corp for the marking cartridges. Production schedules and quantities are coordinated to meet the Army's monthly and annual requirements, with lead times and delivery dates structured to maintain uninterrupted supply. Acceptance testing, production engineering, and quality assurance are integrated into the procurement process to ensure reliability and safety standards are met.
