2034A - Procurement of Ammunition, Army
Description
The CTG, 40mm, All Types program focuses on procuring and developing various 40mm cartridges for the Army. These cartridges serve purposes ranging from training to combat applications. Items like the M781E1 and M918E1 training cartridges are designed for use with grenade launchers and machine guns. These rounds provide visual and thermal signatures upon impact but do not contain explosives, ensuring safety during training exercises.
A key objective of this program is to maintain a robust inventory of training ammunition to support the Army's annual training requirements. The M781E1 Low Velocity Day Night Thermal cartridge is intended for training with the M203 and M320 Grenade Launchers. Similarly, the M918E1 High Velocity cartridge is used with the MK19 Grenade Machine Gun. Both cartridges are crucial for preparing soldiers without the risks associated with live explosives.
The program also addresses operational needs with items like the M430A1 High Explosive Dual Purpose (HEDP) cartridge, which is approved for service use and capable of penetrating armor while inflicting personnel casualties. Additionally, advancements in ammunition technology are explored, such as airburst capabilities seen in the XM1176 and XM1166 cartridges. These developments aim to enhance effectiveness against enemy targets by providing improved accuracy and lethality.
The CTG, 40mm, All Types program aligns with Army procurement goals by ensuring that both training and combat ammunition needs are met. It supports current operational requirements and future capabilities through ongoing research and development efforts. This comprehensive approach ensures that soldiers are well-equipped for both training scenarios and real-world engagements.
