Description
The Comsec Equipment program within the Air Force is designed to enhance communication security through the procurement and support of advanced encryption technologies. This initiative aligns with the Department of Defense's broader efforts to secure information systems against cybersecurity threats. It aims to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of sensitive information by providing secure communication channels for Air Force, Space Force, and other DoD entities. The equipment procured includes a variety of encryption devices such as In-Line Network Encryptors (INEs) and High Assurance Internet Protocol Encryptor (HAIPE) devices.
A significant component of this program is the Information Systems Security Program (ISSP), which focuses on acquiring Communications Security (COMSEC) equipment. This effort supports the secure transport of information across various platforms, ensuring that adversaries cannot intercept or manipulate critical data. The ISSP addresses rising national and DoD priorities by delivering solutions that enable secure communication, thereby maintaining decision superiority in military operations. It also includes upgrades and replacements for existing equipment to incorporate state-of-the-art technologies essential for mission-critical operations.
Another key aspect is the Cryptographic Modernization (CM) effort, which seeks to transform existing cryptographic capabilities to support a seamless joint network environment. This involves developing more robust, modular, and scalable cryptographic devices that enhance performance while reducing costs and ensuring compatibility with the Global Information Grid (GIG). The CM initiative aims to replace or upgrade a substantial number of cryptographic devices within the Air Force's inventory, providing new devices where none previously existed.
The program also encompasses the Air Force Key Management Enterprise (AF KME), which consolidates various requirements related to secure voice/data equipment and key management infrastructure. This includes procuring advanced key processors and transitioning from legacy systems to modernized solutions that meet current security standards. These efforts collectively contribute to strengthening the Air Force's communication security posture in alignment with DoD directives and strategic objectives.
