Description

The Computer Ballistics: LHMBC XM32 program is a line item in the Army's Other Procurement budget, specifically under Communications and Electronics Equipment for Tactical Surveillance. The primary goal of this program is to procure and field the Lightweight Handheld Mortar Ballistic Computer (LHMBC) M32A2 systems, which are designed to provide advanced ballistic computation and digital fire direction capabilities for mortar crews. The LHMBC supports 60mm, 81mm, and 120mm mortar systems, serving as both an aiming aid and a fire direction center. It is intended to enhance operational accuracy and crew survivability.

The objectives of the LHMBC XM32 program include the acquisition of hardware and the continuation of software development, logistics, fielding, and production engineering efforts. The Army plans to procure additional LHMBC M32A2 units in Fiscal Year (FY) 2026. This procurement supports the modernization of both mounted and dismounted mortar weapon systems, ensuring seamless integration with current and future Army platforms and fire control subsystems. The program also addresses hardware and software obsolescence, aiming to sustain and improve the operational effectiveness of mortar units.

The hardware procurement component focuses on acquiring the physical devices necessary for mortar crews. The hardware is designed with a common architecture to facilitate integration with the Net Warrior Mobile/Handheld End User Device (EUD) and other Army systems. Recurring hardware procurement ensures that the Army maintains a technologically current inventory, replacing older systems and expanding capability to additional units.

The software support line funds ongoing software development and maintenance for the ballistic computers. The common software architecture allows for reduced reliance on unique hardware and operating system configurations, promoting standardization across platforms. Software support includes updates, troubleshooting, and compatibility enhancements to ensure that the LHMBC systems remain effective and secure in evolving operational environments.

The fielding and logistics support portion of the budget addresses the deployment and sustainment of the LHMBC systems. This includes training, distribution, and initial setup for units receiving the new equipment. The fielding process is coordinated to minimize disruption and maximize operational readiness across Army units.

The production engineering support line funds the engineering efforts required to transition the LHMBC systems from development to full-rate production and deployment. This covers activities such as quality assurance, manufacturing process improvements, and technical documentation. These efforts are essential to ensure that the LHMBC systems meet Army specifications and performance requirements.
