1507N - Weapons Procurement, Navy
Description
The Coast Guard Weapons program aims to enhance the United States Coast Guard's combat capabilities by equipping its cutters with advanced gun weapon systems. This initiative is part of the Coast Guard Surface Acquisition Program, which seeks to ensure that USCG units are prepared to execute naval warfare tasks alongside US Navy units. The program involves the procurement and integration of Navy-Type/Navy-Owned combat systems, including the 57mm MK 110 Gun and MK 160 Gun Control System for Offshore Patrol Cutters and National Security Cutters, as well as the MK 38 Machine Gun System for Fast Response Cutters, Polar Security Cutters, and Medium Range Endurance Cutters.
The primary goal is to align the Coast Guard's combat systems with future naval shipbuilding programs, ensuring interoperability and commonality between the two services' systems. This alignment supports National Fleet objectives and enhances the self-defense and offensive capabilities of USCG cutters. The 57mm MK 110 Gun is designed to engage surface threats beyond the effective range of smaller caliber gunfire, while the MK 160 Gun Control System provides advanced targeting capabilities, including firing warning shots and disabling fire.
Additionally, efforts are underway to upgrade existing systems and integrate new technologies. For instance, the MK 38 Machine Gun System has been enhanced with greater range and elevation capabilities, as well as an improved electro-optical system. The integration of these weapon systems with combat systems and sensors is critical for maintaining operational readiness and effectiveness in various maritime security missions.
This program represents a strategic investment in modernizing USCG's maritime defense capabilities. By procuring state-of-the-art weaponry and ensuring seamless integration with existing naval systems, this initiative aims to bolster national security and support joint operations with the US Navy.
