Description
The Citizen Broadband Radio System (CBRS) program, managed by the Air Force, aims to protect incumbent spectrum-dependent systems and military operations within auctioned spectrum bands. This initiative is part of the System Development and Demonstration phase, having passed Milestone B approval, indicating it is in the engineering and manufacturing development stage. The primary goal is to facilitate a smooth transition for military operations that rely on specific spectrum bands while maintaining operational integrity.
A key objective of the CBRS program is to conduct ecosystem validations and environmental assessments. These activities are crucial for refining the infrastructure necessary for indefinite spectrum sharing between military and commercial entities. The program emphasizes continued engagement with industry stakeholders to ensure that the sharing framework meets both military requirements and commercial needs.
In fiscal year 2023, funding was allocated to support these transition activities, highlighting the program's focus on protecting existing spectrum-dependent systems. Although no additional funding was planned for fiscal years 2024 and 2025, the groundwork laid in 2023 aims to establish a robust foundation for future developments. The program's strategy involves various contract methods and performing activities yet to be determined, indicating ongoing planning and coordination efforts.
The Citizen Broadband Radio System program underscores the Air Force's commitment to safeguarding its spectrum-dependent operations while adapting to evolving technological landscapes. By focusing on validation processes and industry collaboration, the program seeks to ensure that military communications remain secure and effective amidst increasing demands for shared spectrum access.
