3011F - Procurement of Ammunition, Air Force
Description
The Cartridges program within the Air Force is dedicated to procuring various types of ammunition to support both combat and training operations. This initiative is essential for maintaining the readiness and effectiveness of Air Force personnel and equipment. It includes a range of ammunition types, such as medium caliber rounds like the 20MM PGU-28A/B, used in aircraft gun systems on the F-15, F-16, and F-22 for air-to-air and air-to-ground engagements. These rounds are procured through the Single Manager for Conventional Ammunition under the Department of the Army, with engineering support from the Navy.
The program's objectives include ensuring adequate stockpiles for War Reserve Materiel and supporting pilot training and proficiency. The 30MM PGU-15/B target practice rounds are vital for replenishing these stockpiles to maintain pilot training capabilities. Current inventory levels for several types of ammunition, such as the 25MM PGU-48/B and 30MM PGU-13D/B, are below their total inventory objectives, indicating a need for continued procurement efforts to meet operational demands.
Furthermore, this program addresses specific training needs by providing non-lethal and marking cartridges for force-on-force exercises. The 5.56MM Blue Marking Cartridge is used in M16A2 and M4 rifles during training scenarios to simulate real-world conditions without live fire risks. The procurement strategy involves collaboration with other military branches to optimize resources and ensure cost-effective acquisition of necessary munitions.
The Cartridges program aims to sustain operational readiness by balancing combat requirements with training needs across various platforms. By maintaining a diverse inventory of ammunition types, the Air Force ensures that its personnel are well-prepared for both current missions and future contingencies.
