Biological Warfare Defense

The Biological Warfare Defense program, managed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), focuses on advancing technologies to counter biological, chemical, and radionuclide threats. The primary goal is to enhance detection, prevention, treatment, and remediation capabilities against these threats. This involves developing countermeasures that can halt harmful physiological processes triggered by such attacks. A significant component of this program is the Defense Against Mass Terror Threats initiative. This effort seeks to identify and develop technologies that can significantly mitigate the risk of mass casualties resulting from Weapons of Mass Terror (WMT) attacks. One of the main challenges addressed is reducing U.S. vulnerability by creating new sensors and systems capable of providing early warnings and opportunities to intercept threats before they reach urban areas or other densely populated regions.

The overarching objective is to establish wide-area monitoring capabilities through economically viable and reliable sensing networks that can detect WMT threat signatures.
