AV-8 Series

The AV-8 Series program is focused on enhancing the T/AV-8B aircraft, a single-engine, light attack aircraft utilized by the Marine Corps. The main objective is to improve the aircraft's capabilities for providing responsive offensive air power from ships and forward bases. This involves addressing obsolescence and attrition through system upgrades, including the incorporation of Obsolescence Replacement and Readiness Management Plan systems, along with electrical and structural modifications. The program also seeks to improve inventory sustainment and upgrade efforts.

A significant component of the AV-8 Series program is the integration of LITENING Pod upgrades. These enhancements include a forward section upgrade, an Advanced Tactical Data Link, and associated software improvements. The LITENING Pod boosts targeting capabilities for both Night Attack and RADAR aircraft configurations within the AV-8B fleet. The program office manages these upgrades to maintain commonality across USMC Tactical Air platforms, ensuring improved combat capabilities through increased coverage and enhanced detection capabilities.

The Engine Life Management Program is another critical aspect of the AV-8 Series modifications. This initiative aims to increase flight safety and operational readiness of the F402-RR-408 engine used in the AV-8B aircraft. Engineering Change Proposals are implemented to address safety concerns and enhance engine performance. The final scheduled proposal involves modifications to the Front ECS Filter.

Additionally, the Digital Interoperability initiative within the AV-8 Series ensures that the aircraft remains digitally interoperable with other U.S. and Allied platforms via Link 16 waveform. This includes enabling tactical data communication between AV-8B aircraft, ground units, and joint assets for improved situational awareness and interoperability. Upgrades supporting this capability involve various proposals that enhance communication in contested environments and enable concurrent multi-netting capabilities. These efforts are crucial for maintaining mission availability and system readiness as emerging deficiencies arise.
