Description
The 5 Inch/54 Gun Ammunition is a procurement program managed by the Navy to acquire ammunition for the MK 45 gun installed on Cruiser and Destroyer combatant ships. The program's specific objectives include the procurement of propelling charges, high-explosive projectiles, fuzes, and training rounds to sustain operational requirements. Additionally, the program funds Production Engineering and Gauge requirements for all 5/54 ammunition. The FY 2023 and FY 2024 Product Improvement Program will be used to address source of supply and ammunition obsolescence issues.
The program aims to ensure the availability of essential ammunition items required for naval operations against air, surface, and shore targets. It also focuses on addressing production engineering needs and product improvement efforts to extend the useful military life of the ammunition items and address component obsolescence within the current performance envelope. The program's funding supports the procurement of upgraded components necessary to maximize the fleet's tactical capabilities and addresses gauge requirements essential for ammunition metrology to check critical dimensions/parameters of ammunition items and their parts.
