Description
The University Research Initiatives program, managed by the Air Force, supports defense-related basic research across various scientific and engineering disciplines. Its primary goal is to maintain U.S. military technological superiority by exploring transformational technologies such as nanotechnology, sensor networks, artificial intelligence, and quantum materials. This initiative also aims to enhance the education of U.S. scientists and engineers in fields critical to future defense technologies, with programs like the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate fellowships.

A key objective is to promote multidisciplinary research projects involving multiple principal investigators. This approach encourages complex research efforts not typically achievable through smaller, single-investigator awards. The program supports early-career academic researchers through initiatives like the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. It also funds ongoing multi-year awards and solicits new proposals from universities for future multidisciplinary research grants.

The program emphasizes science and engineering education by supporting post-graduate, graduate, and undergraduate studies at U.S. universities. It continues to award competitive National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate fellowships and supports undergraduate research experiences through initiatives like the Awards to Stimulate and Support Undergraduate Research Experiences. These efforts aim to cultivate a skilled workforce capable of advancing defense-related technologies.

Another significant component is enhancing research instrumentation at U.S. universities. Through the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program, grants are awarded competitively to acquire advanced technology instrumentation and infrastructure. This enhances both research capabilities and educational opportunities in scientific and engineering fields relevant to national security needs. Some efforts in this area will transition to focus on space-related initiatives under the Space Force's jurisdiction in future years.
