Description
The Unmanned Carrier Aviation (UCA) Mission Control System (UMCS) program is an initiative by the Navy focused on developing, integrating, and maintaining systems for operating unmanned aerial vehicles like the MQ-25. The primary goal is to establish a robust system-of-systems that supports vehicle and payload control both on ships and onshore. This includes developing control stations, communication networks, and software systems that facilitate flight operations and tactical missions. The program aims to enhance interoperability with other Department of Defense systems and improve the operational capabilities of the Air Wing of the Future.

A significant objective of UMCS is to modify aircraft carriers, specifically NIMITZ and FORD class carriers, to accommodate these new systems. This involves extensive ship modifications using the Ship Change Document process to install ground control stations and ancillary systems required for communication and integration with existing carrier networks. The program also focuses on integrating launch and recovery systems such as Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment (ALRE) and Joint Precision Approach Landing Systems (JPALS). These modifications are crucial for supporting MQ-25 operations during deployments.

The UMCS program emphasizes collaboration with NAVWAR C4I baseline systems to ensure seamless integration with existing communication infrastructures. This includes integrating various Program of Record systems like CANES, ADNS, STACC, NTCDL, MUOS DMR, DCGS-N, GCCS-M, AIS, and NITES-Next. These integrations are essential for providing reliable network paths for air vehicle data transmission. Additionally, UMCS aims to support multiple classification levels through its Multi Domain Control Capability (MDCX), enhancing security and operational flexibility.

Furthermore, UMCS involves detailed planning and coordination for carrier modifications following NAVSEA processes. This includes preparing technical documentation and guidance information necessary for ship installations. The program requires significant stakeholder coordination to ensure successful implementation across multiple availability periods. Through these efforts, UMCS seeks to establish a future-ready infrastructure capable of supporting advanced unmanned aviation operations within the Navy's strategic framework.
