Description
The TOW 2 System is a vital part of the Army's missile procurement strategy, focusing on acquiring Tube-launched, Optically-tracked, Wireless-guided (TOW) missiles. These missiles are designed to boost the anti-armor and assault capabilities of Infantry Brigade Combat Teams (IBCT), Stryker Brigade Combat Teams (SBCT), and Armor Brigade Combat Teams (ABCT). The system is also used by the U.S. Marine Corps and numerous allied nations, highlighting its significance in national defense and international military cooperation.

The main goal of the TOW 2 System is to procure advanced munitions that offer precision engagement against armored threats, buildings, and field fortifications. This includes the Improved Target Acquisition System (ITAS) launcher, which enhances long-range targeting accuracy for various military components. The program aims to maintain a consistent supply of these missiles to ensure readiness across different operational environments, supporting both active and reserve forces.

In fiscal year 2025, the Army plans to acquire a significant number of TOW 2B Aero missiles as part of its efforts to sustain and enhance its missile inventory. This acquisition aligns with broader strategic goals to address potential obsolescence issues and improve missile safety, reliability, and affordability. The program also seeks to leverage cost advantages from contract negotiations and foreign military sales to optimize procurement efficiency.

Raytheon is the sole industry source for TOW missile production, with manufacturing operations based in Tucson. The program emphasizes maintaining a responsive vendor base and supplier network to support continuous production. This approach ensures that the Army can meet its operational requirements while managing costs effectively through strategic procurement planning and supplier engagement.
