Description
The Tactical Vehicles program within the Navy focuses on procuring light and medium-duty tactical vehicles to enhance the operational capabilities of naval forces. The primary objective is to support troop and equipment movement in various operational environments, ensuring that these vehicles are equipped with necessary armor and communication systems for force protection. This initiative includes acquiring Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs) and other specialized vehicles like the Heavy Gun variant, which are crucial for combat operations and mine countermeasure missions in areas with high improvised explosive device (IED) threats.

A significant goal of the program is to transition from the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) to the JLTV, which offers superior protection and performance. The JLTV is designed to meet the specific needs of Navy Special Warfare units by providing enhanced combat mobility, air transportability, and water fording capabilities while ensuring adequate IED protection. Additionally, the program supports the procurement of medium tactical vehicles such as Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacements (MTVRs) and Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, which are essential for rapid deployment and logistics support in combat zones.

The program also addresses strategic security needs by acquiring HMMWVs for safeguarding TRIDENT II (D5) missiles during storage, handling, or transport. These vehicles play a critical role in maintaining security within Strategic Systems Programs, ensuring that aging security vehicles are replaced with more capable models. Furthermore, it includes acquiring Light Tactical All-Terrain Vehicles to provide expeditionary teams with agile and low-profile transportation options that can be easily deployed across various terrains.

In addition to vehicle procurement, resources are allocated for acquisition support activities. This includes government oversight of acquisition processes, contract management, engineering support, and quality assurance efforts necessary for delivering these tactical assets efficiently. The integration of C4ISR systems into these platforms enhances communication capabilities across convoys, addressing lessons learned from past operations where communication gaps posed significant risks.
