Description
The Tactical Network Radio Systems (Low-Tier) program is a crucial part of the Army's modernization strategy for 2030, aimed at enhancing communication capabilities through advanced radio systems. This initiative focuses on providing both classified and unclassified communications via the Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS) waveform and advanced networking waveforms like TrellisWare TSM. It includes the development and deployment of Manpack radios, which support Tactical Satellite communications using the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) waveform. These radios are part of the Handheld, Manpack, and Small Form Fit (HMS) radio program, designed to offer voice and data communication capabilities for dismounted personnel and platforms in various operational scenarios.
The Manpack Radio project within this program emphasizes providing robust communication solutions that support both legacy and modernized waveforms. It focuses on testing activities such as laboratory technical testing, Performance Verification Tests (PVTs), and Operational User Assessments (OUAs) to gather feedback on system capabilities, usability, and sustainment improvements. Funds are allocated to support these testing activities, ensuring that the radios meet the evolving needs of the Army while reducing future integration costs through modular and open system architectures.
Similarly, the Rifleman Radio project aims to enhance handheld communication devices for soldiers. These radios are designed to provide secure voice and data communications with capabilities for on-the-move operations. The project supports annual PVTs and OUAs to verify enhancements made by vendors. Funding is dedicated to continuing these assessments, focusing on improving performance while maintaining cost-effectiveness through technical alternatives and communication architecture analysis.
The Tactical Network Radio Systems (Low-Tier) program seeks to ensure that U.S. military forces have access to reliable, secure, and versatile communication tools adaptable to various operational environments. By investing in research, development, testing, and evaluation activities, the program aims to deliver state-of-the-art radio systems that meet the diverse needs of different military branches while supporting ongoing modernization efforts.
