Description
The Surface ASW program is dedicated to enhancing Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) capabilities to address threats from enemy submarines. Its primary aim is to develop technologies that improve the detection, classification, localization, and tracking of submerged contacts, as well as defense against modern torpedoes. This initiative is vital for maintaining the strategic advantage of U.S. and coalition naval forces against adversaries advancing their maritime operational capabilities.

To achieve these objectives, the program emphasizes research and development through studies, experiments, and technological advancements. These efforts focus on identifying promising ASW technologies for integration into surface combatants. The program supports the Advanced Capability Build (ACB) process for the AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 Surface Ship ASW Combat System, ensuring continuous improvement and adaptation to emerging threats.

Key activities include transitioning Passive Coherent Processing (PiCP) technology into production for torpedo defense and extending its capabilities for cross-array association. Additionally, there is ongoing development of augmented Continuous Active Sonar (CAS) waveforms and Doppler Matched Active Processing (DMAP) technology. The program also focuses on integrating active torpedo defense and ASW code into a unified baseline and enhancing operator interfaces for improved data visualization.

The acquisition strategy involves competitively awarded contracts through Broad Agency Announcements (BAA) and Other Transaction Authority (OTA). Successful technologies are transitioned into the AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 system via a spiral development process, ensuring systematic integration into fleet operations. This approach facilitates the delivery of new capabilities every two years, aligning with evolving operational requirements.
