Description
The Submarine Training Device Mods program is a key initiative within the Navy's procurement strategy, focusing on enhancing training capabilities across various submarine platforms. It aims to procure, install, and deliver advanced training devices to eight Submarine Training Facilities. These devices support Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical (HM&E), Engineering, Navigation, and Combat Control System training requirements. The goal is to ensure that submarine crews are proficient in both basic and advanced seamanship skills necessary for all submarine mission sets.

A significant objective of the program is the modernization of training systems to maintain compatibility with existing fleet operational equipment. This includes implementing Trainer Enhancement Changes (TECs) as directed by Fleet Type Commanders and Resource Sponsors. The program also focuses on installing training devices at strategic locations like Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to support crew certification and proficiency during extended maintenance periods. By doing so, it ensures that training systems remain aligned with current fleet configurations and technological advancements.

The program is divided into five functional areas: Hull Mechanical & Electrical Trainers (HM&E), Engineering Trainers, Navigation Trainers, Combat Control Acoustic Trainers, and Submarine Attack Center Trainers. Each area addresses specific training needs. For instance, HM&E trainers focus on high-risk scenarios such as firefighting and damage control. Engineering Trainers provide nuclear propulsion plant interactive display equipment for advanced operator training. Navigation Trainers emulate submarine characteristics for navigation safety, while Combat Control Acoustic Trainers enhance sonar employment skills.

The Submarine Attack Center Modifications line upgrades hardware and software to match current fleet configurations. This ensures that attack centers are equipped with modernized combat systems necessary for realistic simulation environments. These modifications support crew certification processes and pre-deployment training exercises, contributing to the overall readiness of the submarine force. Through these comprehensive efforts, the Submarine Training Device Mods program plays a crucial role in maintaining the operational effectiveness of the Navy's submarine fleet.
