Description
The Strategic Missile Systems Equip program is dedicated to procuring and modernizing equipment for the Navy's ballistic missile submarines, with a particular focus on the TRIDENT II (D5) program. This initiative aims to extend the service life of the TRIDENT II systems and ensure their operational readiness through 2042. It includes activities such as shipboard subsystem equipment modernization, technical refresh efforts, and procurement of support equipment like test instrumentation and missile checkout tools.
A significant aspect of this program is the Shipboard Systems Modernization Portfolio (SSMP), which incorporates new technologies to enhance the adaptability and reliability of shipboard systems. The SSMP features strategic initiatives such as the Shipboard Architecture Modernization Initiative (SAMI) and Continuous Capability Insertion and Sustainment (C2IS). These initiatives focus on re-architecting shipboard systems to improve scalability, cyber resilience, and supportability, enabling rapid response to evolving threats.
The program also addresses changes to non-flying tactical hardware through Strategic Programs Alterations (SPALTs). These alterations involve applying available technology to resolve safety hazards, correct design deficiencies, and maintain system effectiveness. Efforts include refreshing inertial systems and integrating common electronics into fire control subsystems to sustain the TRIDENT II weapon system's performance.
Furthermore, the program supports training facilities by procuring equipment necessary for realistic training simulations. This ensures personnel are adequately trained in operating and maintaining critical subsystems. It also includes efforts related to the COLUMBIA Class SSBNs, focusing on developing trainer equipment and executing planned equipment replacement programs to maintain strategic capabilities.
