3011F - Procurement of Ammunition, Air Force
Description
The Spares and Repair Parts program for the Air Force is designed to ensure the availability and readiness of essential components for ammunition procurement. This initiative supports the maintenance and operational efficiency of various munitions by providing necessary spares and repair parts. The primary goal is to sustain newly fielded end items through initial spares, which include repairable components, assemblies, subassemblies, and consumable items. These requirements are determined based on historical failure and demand data from similar items.
The program also focuses on maintaining follow-on sustainment of end items through replenishment spares. These consist of repairable components needed for ongoing support of munitions systems. The replenishment levels are calculated using item-specific failure and demand-driven computations. Examples of these spares include telemetry kits, batteries, fuzes, cables, and electronic components crucial for maintaining fielded end items and test support equipment.
Additionally, the program addresses production challenges such as Diminishing Manufacturing Sources (DMS), material shortages, and obsolescence issues. This involves conducting studies, bridge buys, life-of-type buys, supplier/parts replacement, and qualification activities to ensure future production capabilities are preserved. Engineering studies and testing are also included for systems like the Wind Corrected Munitions Dispenser (WCMD) with telemetry kits.
The Spares and Repair Parts program is vital for maintaining the operational readiness of Air Force munitions stockpiles used by Active, Guard, and Reserve components. By ensuring a steady supply of necessary parts and addressing potential production issues, the program supports both war reserve material needs and annual test and training allocations based on current-year requirements.
