Description
The Sonobuoys - All Types program is integral to the U.S. Navy's Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) mission, focusing on acquiring various sonobuoy types to support maritime operations. These air-launched, expendable sensors relay underwater sounds to remote processors, aiding in submarine detection and tracking. The program aims to meet fleet demand and maintain combat stock levels as determined by the Navy's Munitions Requirements Process (NMRP). Sonobuoys support platforms such as the P-8 Poseidon, P-3 Orion, and H-60 helicopters.

A key objective of the program is transitioning from a sole-source procurement model to a competitive environment with multiple vendors. This shift is expected to enhance cost efficiency and foster innovation within the industrial base. An Independent Government Cost Estimate (IGCE) is used to project unit costs, considering historical prices, vendor base establishment, learning curves, inflation, and supply chain dynamics. This transition aims to ensure a robust supply chain capable of meeting both peacetime and wartime requirements.

The program procures specific sonobuoy types including the AN/SSQ-36 Bathythermograph for ocean temperature profiling, AN/SSQ-53 for passive acoustic detection, AN/SSQ-62 for active acoustic targeting, AN/SSQ-101 for passive acoustic reception in multi-static systems, and AN/SSQ-125 for active search capabilities. Each type enhances ASW capabilities through improved detection and localization of undersea threats.

Maintaining readiness levels is another focus of the program by aligning procurement with actual fleet usage and forecasted needs. It seeks economies of scale by leveraging both domestic procurement funds and Foreign Military Sales (FMS). Additionally, it addresses potential supply chain risks by investing in strategic parts and tooling necessary for industrial base surge capacity during contingencies. This comprehensive approach ensures that the Navy can effectively execute its ASW missions while adapting to evolving technological and operational demands.
