Description
The Precision Sniper Rifle (PSR) program is a significant initiative under the Army's modernization priorities, aimed at enhancing joint lethality in contested environments as outlined in the National Defense Strategy. This program focuses on developing a more lethal force by introducing the PSR as the primary anti-personnel sniper weapon system for all Army sniper teams. It will replace older models like the M2010 Enhanced Sniper Rifle and the M107 semi-automatic .50 caliber sniper rifle. The PSR offers improved accuracy, extended range, and increased sniper survivability, making it essential for maintaining combat effectiveness against peer competitors.
The U.S. Army has awarded a contract to Barrett Firearms Manufacturing, Inc., for producing and delivering the MK22 Precision Sniper Rifle, which features a multi-role adaptive design. This agreement spans five years and supports an acquisition objective of 2,800 systems. The PSR is a non-developmental item with a multi-caliber, bolt-action design effective against personnel and materiel targets at extreme ranges. It includes advanced components such as sound suppressors and direct view optics with fire control capabilities.
In fiscal year 2025, plans include procuring 217 complete weapon systems along with additional direct view optics to meet acquisition objectives. These optics will be integrated at the operator level to ensure readiness and effectiveness in various operational scenarios. The program supports fielding and engineering efforts consistently from fiscal years 2022 through 2026. The PSR's enhanced capabilities allow snipers to engage enemy forces effectively while remaining undetected across diverse lighting conditions.
The program also encompasses logistical support elements such as gage kits for maintenance tasks and optical augmentation devices for improved targeting accuracy. By replacing older systems with the PSR, the Army aims to increase stand-off distances and ensure overmatch against enemy counter-sniper engagements. This initiative aligns with broader defense strategies focused on homeland defense missions, domestic emergency responses, and military support to civil authorities as mandated by national defense policies.
