Description
The Power Projection Applied Research program, managed by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), focuses on advancing technologies critical to maintaining maritime superiority. This initiative supports research in directed energy, high-speed weapon propulsion, and Electro-Optic/Infrared (EO/IR) sensor technologies. The primary objective is to develop capabilities that enable the deployment of Directed Energy (DE) weapons and defenses against adversary DE systems.

Additionally, the program aims to enhance vehicle and propulsion technology for high-speed weapons operating at speeds from Mach 3 to Mach 8 and beyond. A significant aspect of this program is its emphasis on developing advanced sensor technologies and Naval Precision Strike Operations. The goal is to equip naval forces with the ability to quickly locate, target, and strike critical targets ashore.

This involves investment in EO/IR devices and advanced sensors that provide comprehensive situational awareness and targeting capabilities. The research also supports the development of technologies that protect naval platforms against imaging infrared seekers. The program's efforts are aligned with the National Defense Strategy and are guided by priorities set by the Chief of Naval Research.

It encompasses a range of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), primarily focusing on TRL 2 to TRL 4, which involves technology concept formulation and component validation in laboratory environments. The research conducted under this program is crucial for providing solutions to current challenges while preparing for future operational needs.

In addition to its core objectives, the Power Projection Applied Research program includes congressional interest items such as meta-material broadband coatings. These efforts are aimed at enhancing material properties for various defense applications. The program represents a strategic investment in applied research that ensures U.S. naval forces remain equipped with cutting-edge technologies necessary for effective defense and operational superiority in an increasingly complex maritime environment.
