Personal Defense Weapon (Roll)

The Personal Defense Weapon (ROLL) program is focused on enhancing the Army's capabilities through the procurement of Launched Electronic Stun Devices (LESDs). These devices serve as intermediate force conducted energy weapons, providing military personnel, particularly Military Police, with a non-lethal option for force escalation. The primary goal is to increase force protection and offer a viable means of incapacitating individuals from a distance using electromagnetic interference effects.

In fiscal year 2025, the program aims to procure 2,311 LESDs. This acquisition supports both active and reserve components of the Army, ensuring comprehensive coverage for homeland defense missions and domestic emergency responses. The initiative aligns with Section 1815 of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act, highlighting its importance in military support to civil authorities.

The program also includes provisions for Fielding and New Equipment Training (NET), which are essential for effective deployment and utilization of these devices. By focusing on both procurement and training, the program ensures that personnel are well-prepared to integrate LESDs into their operational frameworks.
