Description
The Next Generation Combat Vehicle Technology program is a central initiative under the Army's modernization efforts, concentrating on the development of advanced combat vehicle technologies. This initiative seeks to enhance capabilities by researching and designing technologies that make combat vehicles smarter, faster, more lethal, and more adaptable. It emphasizes foundational vehicle architectures such as autonomy, power, electronic, physical, lethality, and protection. The research supports the development of manned, optionally manned, and unmanned vehicles with decisive lethality.

The Combat Vehicle Robotics Technology project focuses on integrating multi-domain robotic and autonomous systems into Army formations. It aims to enhance autonomous behaviors like obstacle detection and avoidance while improving soldier-machine interfaces for efficient mission completion. The project also explores teaming and tactical behaviors for multi-vehicle goal negotiation and develops methods for using map data to increase situational awareness. This work is performed by the Ground Vehicle System Center (GVSC) and aligns with priority areas set by the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering.

Another significant component is the Crew Augmentation and Optimization Technology project, which seeks to reduce vehicle crew sizes while maintaining operational effectiveness in complex environments. This project develops scalable Warfighter Machine Interfaces (WMIs) and dynamic tasking frameworks to optimize crew performance. It also focuses on characterizing Soldier interactions with intelligent systems to improve human-system performance in mixed teams. The research supports future vehicle operations through soldier experimentation and technical concept assessments.

The Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning Technology project aims to develop AI software and algorithms that enhance autonomous maneuver capabilities for the Next Generation Combat Vehicle (NGCV). This effort focuses on increasing autonomy while ensuring high survivability and lethality in contested environments. It investigates power distribution technologies for efficient energy use in unmanned platforms and explores methods for rapid learning and adaptation in complex military scenarios. The research is conducted in coordination with other advanced technology projects to ensure strategic alignment with Army priorities.
