Description
The Next Generation Air-refueling System (NGAS) is a strategic initiative by the Air Force focused on developing an advanced air refueling system to meet future joint force requirements. The program's primary goal is to deliver adaptive and agile platforms and mission systems as part of a comprehensive tanker Family of Systems by the mid-2030s. The Air Mobility Command is leading an Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) to shape program requirements, refine acquisition strategies, and establish a technology development timeline. This involves assessing clean sheet designs and purpose-built aircraft to address anticipated threats and capabilities while leveraging full and open competition.

In FY 2025, the Department of the Air Force plans to fund post-AoA studies, update tanker models, and conduct high-fidelity modeling and simulation exercises to further explore joint warfighting concepts. These efforts aim to validate AoA results, leading to the documentation of initial requirements in a draft Capabilities Development Document (CDD). Preparations for the Technology Maturation and Risk Reduction (TMRR) phase and Milestone A activities will also continue. The department is awaiting AoA outcomes before determining specific NGAS development funding.

The NGAS program emphasizes integrating mission systems on existing platforms like the KC-46A and Tanker Recapitalization aircraft. This integration includes platform-agnostic communications, threat-agnostic defensive systems, and agile mission execution capabilities. As part of its acquisition strategy, the program will focus on clean sheet designs that are purpose-built to address projected threats while ensuring compliance with Federal Acquisitions Regulation/Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (FAR/DFARS). The strategy involves awarding Technology Maturation Risk Reduction contracts to multiple vendors for developing key future technologies.

NGAS represents a significant effort in advancing air refueling capabilities through innovative design and technology integration. By focusing on adaptive platforms and comprehensive mission systems, the program aims to enhance operational effectiveness in future combat scenarios. This initiative underscores the importance of strategic planning and technological advancement in maintaining air superiority and supporting joint force operations in evolving threat environments.
