Description
The Mortar Systems program within the Army is focused on procuring and producing various mortar weapon systems, including the 60mm Lightweight M224A1, 81mm Lightweight M252A1, and 120mm M120A1/M121 systems. These systems are intended to support both mounted and dismounted operations across different brigade combat teams such as Armor Brigade Combat Teams (ABCTs), Stryker Brigade Combat Teams (SBCTs), and Infantry Brigade Combat Teams (IBCTs). The program aims to enhance the Army's operational capabilities by ensuring these mortar systems meet current and future Army Acquisition Objectives (AAO) and Operational Need Statement (ONS) requirements.
One of the key objectives of the Mortar Systems program is to address equipment shortages resulting from the reorganization of ABCTs, which have expanded from two battalions per brigade to three. This expansion necessitates additional 120mm mortar weapon systems to meet increased demands. The program also supports integrating these systems onto current and future vehicle platforms, enhancing mobility and flexibility in various operational environments. Procurement includes essential components such as M326 Mortar Stowage Kits, trailers, and other supporting subsystems to ensure rapid deployment and effective use in combat scenarios.
In FY 2025, the program plans to procure six complete mortar systems, with resources allocated for both base requirements and enduring costs associated with overseas operations. This includes support for acquiring M121 120mm mortar weapon systems and related equipment. Additionally, resources are designated for supporting the European Deterrence Initiative (EDI), reflecting a strategic focus on enhancing deterrence capabilities in Europe.
The Mortar Systems program also emphasizes modernization efforts through Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs) and Technical Data Packages (TDPs) to address technical issues and obsolescence concerns. These initiatives aim to maintain system safety and reliability while meeting special force requirements. Furthermore, the program supports international efforts by replacing weapons transferred to Ukraine as part of a broader strategy to counter external threats, highlighting its role in both national defense and global security cooperation.
