Description
The Medical Support Equipment program is designed to enhance the medical capabilities of naval operating ships by integrating new technology and medical equipment. Managed by the Program Executive Office Unmanned and Small Combatants, specifically through Program Management Support Expeditionary Missions, its primary goal is to ensure ships are equipped with necessary medical tools. These tools are outlined in the Authorized Medical Allowance List and Authorized Dental Allowance List, tailored to specific ship classes or commands. Approval for these lists comes from Fleet Type Commanders with input from Fleet Forces Command Surgeons.
A significant objective of the program is to support theater hospitalization capabilities, known as Role III Care, through the Fleet Hospital/Expeditionary Medical Facility program. This involves procuring critical medical equipment such as Direct Digital Radiology Systems and Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing Milling Machines. These tools are essential for maintaining high standards of casualty management as determined by the Department of Defense Combat Trauma Surgery Committee. The program also supports major system replacements on hospital ships like USNS COMFORT and USNS MERCY to ensure their sustainability.
The program focuses on deploying advanced diagnostic systems like Interventional Radiology Angiography and Certified Diagnostic Mobile Labs. These systems provide modern capabilities for in-theater diagnostics and screening, supporting distributed maritime operations and Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations. The integration of these technologies aims to improve patient care during transport and in austere environments, enhancing operational readiness.
Additionally, production engineering support activities facilitate the planning and management of mission-critical components within the Expeditionary Medical Family of Systems. This includes identifying necessary resources such as facilities, hardware, software, documentation, manpower, and personnel. The objective is to maintain a consistent procurement profile that adapts to evolving technological requirements while ensuring cost-effectiveness through careful analysis of material costs and availability.
