Description
The LPD Flight II program, part of the Navy's Shipbuilding and Conversion initiative, aims to replace the aging LSD-41 and LSD-49 Class ships. Its primary objective is to enhance the Navy's amphibious capabilities by supporting the embarkation, transport, control, insertion, sustainment, and extraction of Marine Air-Ground Task Force elements. This is achieved through helicopters, landing craft, and amphibious vehicles. The program aligns with the Capabilities Development Document for LX(R) and builds upon all previous LX(R) efforts.

The LPD 17 Flight II ships are designed to integrate advanced electronics and ordnance systems for improved operational effectiveness. Key systems include the Ship Self Defense System (SSDS), Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC), and AN/SLQ-32(V)6 Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP). These systems aim to provide enhanced self-defense capabilities against anti-ship cruise missile threats. Additionally, there are significant investments in mission systems and C4ISR to ensure robust command and control capabilities.

Huntington Ingalls Industries is tasked with constructing these vessels, focusing on delivering state-of-the-art hulls, mechanical systems, and electrical components. The production schedule outlines a systematic approach to shipbuilding with specific timelines for contract awards, construction starts, and delivery dates. The program emphasizes cost management through advance procurement strategies for long lead-time materials such as engines and propellers.

The LPD Flight II program seeks to modernize the Navy's amphibious fleet by incorporating cutting-edge technology and ensuring timely delivery of vessels. This initiative supports broader strategic goals by enhancing maritime mobility and operational readiness in various combat scenarios. The program's comprehensive approach addresses both current needs and future challenges in naval warfare.
