Description
The LPD Class Support Equipment program is designed to enhance the operational capabilities and longevity of the LPD 17 class ships through various modernization efforts. It focuses on upgrading mission-critical electronics and Hull Mechanical & Engineering (HM&E) systems, such as Engineering Control Systems (ECS), Ship Control Systems (SCS), and the Shipboard Wide-Area Network (SWAN). These upgrades aim to improve the ships' command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) capabilities. Additionally, there is support for developing a new HM&E Network to replace aging components and address obsolescence issues.

A key objective is ensuring that the LPD 17 class ships remain service-ready by conducting mid-life modernizations and addressing hardware/software obsolescence. This involves replacing outdated systems with newer technologies, such as upgrading Windows operating systems on ECS and SCS, enhancing fire detection systems, and improving communication systems like the Integrated Voice Communication System (IVCS). The program also emphasizes training sailors through Schoolhouse Technical Training Equipment to ensure proficiency in operating and maintaining these advanced systems.

The program addresses critical mechanical and auxiliary system upgrades to enhance safety and reliability. This includes modifications such as Titanium Valve Replacement across different phases based on valve size and location within the ship's hull. Other mechanical improvements include Knuckleboom Crane enhancements for better cargo handling capabilities. These efforts aim to reduce maintenance demands and improve overall ship survivability.

Furthermore, the SWAN-CANES Integration initiative is a significant component of this program. It focuses on transitioning from legacy SWAN systems to Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES). This transition is crucial for maintaining cybersecurity standards and ensuring that LPD 17 class ships can effectively counter evolving cyber threats. The integration process involves replacing obsolete network hardware and software while sustaining existing systems until full CANES implementation is achieved.
