Description
The Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Mine Countermeasures (MCM) Mission Modules program is designed to boost the Navy's ability to detect and neutralize sea mines in littoral zones while minimizing risk to personnel. This initiative focuses on outfitting LCS vessels with advanced mine countermeasure systems, including sensors and weapons deployed from MH-60S helicopters and unmanned vehicles. The main goal is to establish a comprehensive detect-to-engage sequence that tackles various mine threats, such as bottom, tethered, near-surface, and surface mines.
Key components of the program include the Airborne Mine Neutralization System (AMNS) and the Near Surface Detection (NSD) Module. These systems have achieved Initial Operational Capability in previous fiscal years and play a crucial role in rapid detection and neutralization operations in critical maritime areas. Additionally, the Coastal Mine Reconnaissance Module employs unmanned aerial vehicles for mine detection in coastal zones, providing essential intelligence for safe military operations.
Further objectives involve acquiring Unmanned Minesweeping (UMS) Modules and Remote Minehunting (RMH) Modules. These are intended to enhance the Navy's capacity for sweeping and hunting operations using unmanned surface vehicles equipped with specialized payload delivery systems. The program also focuses on transitioning from Block 0 to Block 1 capabilities for certain systems, ensuring technological advancements and improved operational performance.
In FY 2025, plans include acquiring additional MCM Unmanned Surface Vehicles, Minesweeping Payload Delivery Systems, and support equipment necessary for mission deployments. Engineering Change Proposals will be implemented to address obsolescence issues and enhance system reliability. These efforts are vital for replacing legacy mine countermeasure platforms and maintaining a strong defense posture in maritime environments.
