Description
The KC-46A MDAP program, managed by the Air Force, aims to replace the aging fleet of aerial refueling aircraft with the KC-46A Pegasus. The primary objective is to procure 179 aircraft through 13 production lots, enhancing the Air Force's capability for air refueling operations. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to recapitalize the entire tanker fleet over a period exceeding 30 years. The KC-46A is designed to serve as a critical force extender in joint warfighting scenarios, providing refueling capabilities and augmenting airlift operations with cargo, passenger, and aeromedical evacuation functionalities.
The program's goals include ensuring that the KC-46A can operate under various conditions, including day, night, and adverse weather. It maintains communication and navigation capabilities for worldwide operations and equips the aircraft with self-defense mechanisms and battle space awareness to enhance survivability in medium threat environments. Additionally, the KC-46A is intended to function as a joint and coalition communications node, facilitating secure command and control for aircrew situational awareness.
To support these objectives, the program encompasses several key components such as Training Systems, Support Equipment, Operational Site Activation, and Depot Stand-Up. The Aircrew Training System (ATS) and Maintenance Training System (MTS) are integral parts of this effort. They provide necessary training devices and courseware to meet Air Mobility Command requirements. The ATS contract includes various training devices like Weapon System Trainers and Boom Operator Trainers, while the MTS focuses on developing an optimized training system for maintainers using advanced technologies.
Furthermore, the program addresses potential challenges such as diminishing manufacturing sources and obsolescence planning activities. It includes studies and analyses to ensure continued production efficiency and effectiveness. The KC-46A MDAP also supports efforts related to Government Furnished Equipment procurement for future aircraft lots and corrective measures for existing deficiencies in fielded aircraft systems.
