Description
The Joint Precision Approach and Landing System (JPALS) is an initiative by the Navy to enhance precision approach and landing capabilities on CVN and LHA/D ships. Its primary objective is to provide a reliable precision approach system for aircraft such as the F-35B, F-35C, and MQ-25A, especially in environments lacking AN/SPN-46 Automatic Carrier Landing Systems. JPALS ensures safe and efficient landing operations during night and instrument flight conditions, including auto-land capabilities on CVN ships and hover transition points on LHA/D ships.

JPALS also integrates advanced technologies like the Landing Autonomous Navigation Technology for Enhanced Recovery to Navy Ships (LANTERNS). This integration is part of a broader effort to develop enhanced Precise Ship-Relative Navigation (PS-RN) systems that support autonomous ship recovery of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) under challenging conditions. The program aligns with Future Naval Capabilities/Advanced Technology Development efforts, emphasizing cybersecurity compliance and information assurance in its software development processes.

The goals include developing M-code capable receivers, supporting Joint Strike Fighter F-35B/C integration, and refining MQ-25A concepts. These efforts are crucial for ensuring that JPALS can meet the operational demands of modern naval aviation platforms. Additionally, JPALS supports Distributed Maritime Operations by enhancing navigation capabilities for both manned and unmanned platforms, contributing to resilient launch and recovery operations in contested environments.

JPALS represents a strategic investment in naval aviation technology, focusing on research, development, testing, and evaluation activities necessary for integrating cutting-edge systems into existing naval infrastructure. By addressing both current operational needs and future technological advancements, JPALS aims to maintain the Navy's edge in precision landing capabilities across various platforms.
