Description
The "Items less than $5 Million" initiative within the Navy's procurement activities focuses on acquiring equipment and vehicles essential for supporting naval operations. This effort includes procuring special purpose vehicles and equipment to enhance the operational capabilities of the Naval Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC), Naval Special Warfare (NSW), and shore activities. The program aims to provide necessary tools such as tank trucks, waste disposal trucks, maintenance trucks, and ammunition handling vehicles, which are vital for logistical support in remote locations and during military operations.
A primary objective is ensuring the Navy has access to specialized vehicles that can support expeditionary missions. This involves fielding a fleet of special purpose vehicles for airfield damage repair, pier damage repair, expeditionary fuels, and ordnance handling. The program also supports replacing outdated equipment to maintain readiness and effectiveness in fleet shore operations. The acquisition strategy involves collaborating with various contractors through methods such as Military Interdepartmental Purchase Requests (MIPR) and contracts with vendors like Navistar, Inc., Houston Freightliner Inc., and Mack Defense.
Combat construction support equipment is another focus area, crucial for military construction during operations. This includes acquiring trailers, expeditionary facilities, fuel/water services, and engineered capabilities that ensure interoperability across joint forces. The goal is to enhance energy efficiency and standardization within the Navy and Department of Defense (DoD). Additionally, mobile utilities support equipment (MUSE) is procured to provide short-term utility solutions in case of equipment failures or natural disasters.
Ocean construction equipment is also part of this initiative to support underwater facility maintenance and readiness. This involves procuring specialized ocean construction tools such as underwater survey systems and sonar systems. The aim is to sustain the Navy's capability to perform site selection, construction, inspection, maintenance, repair, and removal of fixed underwater facilities while ensuring fleet readiness through effective utilization of these resources.
