Description
The Indirect Fire Protection Family Of Systems program, initiated by the Army in FY 2025, aims to enhance the defensive capabilities of the military against indirect fire threats. This initiative includes the procurement of the Land-based Phalanx Weapon System (LPWS), which is designed to provide counter-rocket, artillery, and mortar (C-RAM) capabilities. The LPWS is equipped with a high rate of fire 20mm Gatling gun, guided by integrated radar and infrared systems, to protect high-value ground assets from incoming munitions and unmanned aerial systems.

A significant component of this program supports the integration of LPWS into Avenger Battalions such as the 5-5 and 2-44 Air Defense Artillery. The goal is to deliver six LPWS units in FY 2025, despite an initial miscalculation indicating nine units. This adjustment reflects a focus on maximizing procurement efficiency with available resources. The production involves collaboration with Raytheon in Louisville, KY, ensuring timely delivery and integration into existing defense frameworks.

The overarching objective is to bolster tactical surveillance and electronic equipment capabilities within the Army's arsenal. By investing in advanced technology like the LPWS, the Army seeks to maintain a robust defense posture against evolving threats in various operational theaters. This effort aligns with broader strategic goals to enhance national security through improved readiness and technological superiority.

The Indirect Fire Protection Family Of Systems represents a strategic investment in modernizing defense mechanisms against indirect fire threats. Through careful planning and resource allocation, this program aims to deliver critical capabilities that enhance the Army's operational effectiveness and safeguard vital assets on the battlefield.
