Description
The Indirect Fire Protection Capability Increment 2 (IFPC Inc 2) program is a significant element of the Army's Air and Missile Defense Modernization Priorities. This initiative focuses on developing a ground-based weapon system designed to acquire, track, engage, and neutralize threats such as Cruise Missiles (CM), Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), and Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar (RAM) attacks. The system integrates a launcher and interceptor with the Army Integrated Air and Missile Defense open systems architecture, IAMD Battle Command System, and the Sentinel sensor to effectively support its mission objectives.

The program aims to procure launchers, interceptors, and associated equipment to enhance defense capabilities. The Army has already deployed an Interim Cruise Missile Defense capability using the Israeli Iron Dome Defense System - Army. Efforts are ongoing to integrate a lasting IFPC capability that leverages existing architectures and systems. This includes procuring two Iron Dome Batteries for technical evaluation and operational utility assessment, with logistics analysis underway to determine training requirements and maintenance policies.

In addition to procurement efforts, the IFPC Inc 2 program supports research and development activities aimed at refining system capabilities. A competitive strategy was pursued with industry partners participating in a demonstration in FY 2021. This led to an agreement with Dynetics, Inc., which is tasked with delivering an IFPC Inc 2 prototype solution by FY 2025. The program also coordinates with the Air and Missile Defense Cross Functional Team to ensure alignment with broader defense objectives.

Looking ahead, the program plans to increase production capacity for launchers through facilitization efforts. The Army intends to leverage any cost advantages from contract negotiations or foreign military sales to expand procurement quantities further. By integrating advanced technologies and fostering collaboration with industry partners, the IFPC Inc 2 program aims to provide robust indirect fire protection capabilities that address current and emerging threats effectively.
